Tofuku-ji Temple

東福寺 vol19 グラビア

A Zen temple boasting magnificent nature surrounded by a sea of red leaves.

It is the head temple of the Rinzai sect Tofuku-ji school, which began when Michiie KUJO built the Buddha hall in 1239. There are precious buildings where you can know the life of a Zen priest in the Muromachi period such as the oldest Sanmon gate in Muromachi which represents a Zen temple, a bathroom, and the tosu (toilet). The natural beauty of the grounds such as the Tsutenkyo Bridge and the garden of the hojo designed by Mirei Shigemori is overwhelming.
The Tsutenbashi Bridge over the valley that runs through the temple grounds is covered with beautiful green maple trees.
