It is a famous temple with the dignity of the highest rank, which is praised for its superb scenery even in Kabuki
It is the grand head temple of the Nanzen-ji school of the Rinzai sect, founded by the Cloistered Emperor Kameyama in 1291. Later, Yoshimitsu ASHIKAGA established it as a higher rank than the Kyoto Gozan Temples and the Kamakura Gozan Temples, and it became the highest status among Japanese Zen temples. The dry landscape garden created by Enshu Kobori and the modern arched pier "Suirokaku" designed by Sakuro Tanabe are also worth seeing.
The 22 m temple gate has a circuit-like staircase that you can climb, and you can see the view from the top of the tower.
The photo shows the Three Gates, also known as Tenka Ryumon. In autumn, you can see the temple grounds colored with autumn leaves from the top of the tower.
