Kyoto’s famous cherry blossom viewing spot with strong ties to the Shinsengumi
This temple was founded in 1175 and is famous for its cherry blossoms and autumn leaves. It holds valuable cultural assets such as a threestory pagoda and Buddhist statues. It is also the birthplace of the “Shinsengumi,” the famous heroes of the late Edo period.
It depicts Hozo Bosatsu, the predecessor of Amida Nyorai, who is devoted to saving people. His large piles of hair are said to be a sign of his long and arduous ascetic practice.
It is said to have been founded by Gyoki Bodhisattva at the order of Kibi Makibi, a scholar of the Nara period. It is said to bring blessings such as traffic safety, protection from bad luck, and the fulfillment of good relationships.
Monks brand them with their hearts. Wishes are written on the black painted surface in reference to “Kurodani.”
A special amulet awarded when praying to Monju Bosatsu or Kibi Kannon Bosatsu. There are five different colors (cannot be specified).
Five Hundred Arhats, Amitabha Nyorai, Monju Bosatsu, etc. Please come and visit as a souvenir of your visit to the temple!
