Beautiful harmony with nature modern Shangri-La.
The museum opened in November 1997 in the mountains of Shigaraki, Shiga Prefecture, in a rich natural setting. It was designed by I.M. Pei, who also designed the glass pyramid at the Louvre Museum in Paris, based on the theme of "Peachland. The approach to the museum is characterized by a tunnel and a suspension bridge, which leads visitors through a path lined with weeping cherry trees. The museum's collection, which was started with the idea of "making the world more beautiful, peaceful, and enjoyable through art," consists of approximately 3,000 items, ranging from a wide variety of Japanese art to ancient art from around the world. Of these, approximately 250 are on display at any given time. Enjoy the works of Eastern and Western civilizations and the open space filled with nature and skylight.
