It originated in 1202, when Zen master Eisai, said to be the founder of Zen Buddhism, built Kennin-ji Temple as its guardian deity. Along with Nishinomiya-Jinja Shrine in Hyogo and Imamiya-Ebisu-Jinja Shrine in Osaka, it is one of the three major Ebisu shrines in Japan.
At 10th Ebisu, Kitcho sasa is given to pray for the success of business.
Ebisu is held on the 10th from January 8 to 12th every year. On the 9th of the evening Ebisu festival, From 9th to 11th, the gate is open all night and is crowded with many people.
