It originated in 1202, when Zen master Eisai, said to be the founder of Zen Buddhism, built Kennin-ji Temple as its guardian deity. Along with Nishinomiya-Jinja Shrine in Hyogo and Imamiya-Ebisu-Jinja Shrine in Osaka, it is one of the three major Ebisu shrines in Japan.
