Nishiki Town Hitoyoshi Navy Air Base Museum

人吉海軍航空基地資料館 熊本県観光連盟2 vol.5

In the 18th year of the Showa Period (1943), during the Pacific War, “the Hitoyoshi Base” of the Japanese Navy was constructed in Kuma Basin, in the mountains of the southern Kumamoto Prefecture. At that time, it was remembered as the only full-fledged air base with a concrete runway in the prefecture. Seventy years after the war, a huge number of underground facilities were discovered on this site. What was the purpose of this underground facility left in a vast area the size of a village?

Now, the “secrets” of this place are finally revealed.

ひみつ基地ミュージアム

The Nishiki Secret Base Museum considers these remnants as exhibits, and guides visitors through the area where they are scattered as a field museum (outdoor museum). The guided tours included in each plan are popular tours led by professional guides.
