Kagoshima City Aquarium is the biggest aquarium in Kyushu, located directly in front of the active volcano Sakurajima. About 10,000 creatures from 800 species can be seen, mainly marine life from the oceans surrounding Kagoshima.
Daily events such as whale shark feeding and Guided tours are also exceptional.
The largest water tank in “Kagoshima City Aquarium” exhibits whale sharks, the world’s largest fish, bonito, yellowfin tuna, and other fish that migrate with the currents of the Kuroshio. The Kagoshima City Aquarium returns whale sharks to the sea after they have grown up.
The sea of Kagoshima is home to such a wide variety of jellyfish that it has been called “a treasure house of jellyfish”. Jellyfish are exhibited and introduced in a soothing and relaxing space reminiscent of the sea of Kagoshima.
Exhibited here are creatures that live around the “Nansei Islands”, the coral reef islands that spread to the south of Kagoshima. In each tank, we have recreated underwater environments of various locations around Amami Oshima. Here you will find not only colorful fishes but also corals, seaweeds, starfish, sea cucumbers, and other creatures that dwell in the coral reefs.
The most popular event in Kagoshima City Aquarium. The “Dolphin Performance” is held at the Dolphin Pool. Here they will introduce you to the ability, ecology of dolphins and their training programs. In addition, visitors can take part in the interactive activities like giving signals to dolphins. Dolphin Performance are held with different programs on a yearly basis.
Dolphins can swim out from their pool into the waterway freely. The Dolphin Waterway is a specially maintained 300-meter waterway connected to Kinko Bay(Kagoshima Bay). It is an admission-free zone open for everyone to come and watch the dolphins swim and play. Aside from dolphins, Sunfish and Dolphin Fish can also be seen depending on the season.

The sea boundary between subtropics and temperate regions has an abundant variety of coral reefs and living environments.
A wide variety of deep-sea life from the sea of Kagoshima are exhibited. These slightly eerie deep-sea creatures, which are usually unseen, allow visitors to experience an extraordinary world.
The sea slug is characterized by having beautiful colors and an adorable appearance, but it is difficult to raise them. Kagoshima City Aquarium is the first Aquarium to showcase sea slugs in Japan. While exhibiting sea slugs, they establish both their reproduction method and rearing methods.
In the amusement shop located on the 1st floor, visitors can purchase sweets , stuffed animals, key chains and plenty of original products only available at the amusement shop that are perfect for souvenirs. There is also a restaurant available on the 2nd floor.
