The grand clock tower that changes its appearance with each season. At certain times of the day, the sound of the bell resonates, and dolls start moving to the music.
Deliciousness and Fun Abound! Take a Stroll Through Shintencho Shopping Street!
Located in the heart of the Tenjin district, Shintencho Shopping Street stretches from east to west and is lined with approximately 90 specialty shops and restaurants. Enjoy gourmet dining and shopping all while experiencing the spirit of Hakata merchants who have woven a history of 78 years in this vibrant location.
Shintencho Shopping Street stretches from Nishitetsu Fukuoka (Tenjin) Station towards Tenjin Nishi-dori. When Tenjin-machi (its former name) was burnt to the ground by a massive air raid following the war, Hakata merchants rallied together with the goal of “restore vitality and smiles.” In 1946, 21 shops were opened in tile-roofed wooden buildings, and by 1950, a large-scale arcade spanning 288 meters was opened. The Shinten Festival, which began during the grand opening, became an annual event, and is now known as the Big Wagon Festival.
The pioneering spirit of Hakata merchants injected new life not only into the 700-year tradition of Hakata Gion Yamakasa, but also into the streets of Shintencho. The lively call of Osshoi and the spirited Yamakasa have become the summer traditions in Shintencho. In the 78 years since its establishment, the vibrant street lined with diverse stores is always bustling. The symbol of the shopping street—the large clock tower—is now in its second generation and continues to resonate with the gentle chime of bells in the hearts of passersby.
